The exterior of this mid-century Mercer Island residence had been completely updated with new Parklex® siding, new windows and doors, and a fresh paint scheme.

The owners also wanted to better define the entry of the home. A new steel canopy was designed to contrast with the natural wood siding of the home. The canopy is constructed of steel C-channels which are warped to give the canopy a more sculptural feel. Steel decking on the underside of the roof adds to the industrial appearance of the sculptural canopy design and reflects light in various ways during the day and at night. The canopy appears to be supported by a single steel column which pierces the stone paving.

Contemporary Farm House in Virginia

Located at meadows of Rappahannock County, Virginia, sure would be difficult to leave come Sunday night. Designed by McInturff Architects, this home’s contemporary profile takes a country-casual cue from surrounding structures in its form, color, layout and materials like galvanized roofs and concrete block fireplaces. Three ochre-colored pavilions make up the main living areas, which are connected by “barn-red” sections and green wings reminiscent of an upscale shed, if you can imagine that. The visually interesting exterior features accents of siding and wooden beams which offer a rustic feel to the home. Inside the spaces are bright, casual and functional. A large family room, kitchen and screened porch are found on the main floor, while bedrooms compose the second floor and a secluded study tops the home

BLUE RIDGE RESIDENCE
Seattle, Washington ByMotionspace Architecture

Within the small community of Blue Ridge are many mid-century brick homes in need of updating. This largely untouched home on a large corner lot in Blue Ridge was in dire need of interior and exterior renovation. On the exterior, new fir windows and doors, a stucco exterior, and a new roof freshen the already clean lines of the home. The interior lacked a full master suite and suffered from a lower level accessed down a narrow dark stairway. Without adding square footage, the main level plan was reorganized by switching the location of the master bedroom and the living room. This allowed space for a master bathroom and closet area. The old master bedroom location turned into the living room and a wall was removed to open the stairway to this room. A natural fir ‘feature wall’ visually connects the lower and upper level together. New fir cabinetry, and ceiling treatments lend a warm sophisticated feeling to the interiors. The kitchen was ‘lightly’ remodeled by painting the existing cabinets and replacing the floor, countertops and appliances
